A SHORT HISTORY OF VALENTINES DAY

There are numerous legends surrounding the origins of Valentine's Day.  Many believe that its roots lie in an ancient Roman fertility celebration, know as the festival of Lupercalia, which was celebrated on the 13^th, 14^th and 15^th February every year.  

This Pagan festival was then re-framed as a Christian feast day in around 456 AD by Pope Gelasius, who declared 14^th February to be St. Valentine's Day.  After which St. Valentine it is named however is unknown, as there were at least 3 Saints of that name around this time, all of who it is said were martyred on 14^th February.

Nowadays of course, Valentine's Day is an opportunity to share our love for the special person in our lives, and common symbols of the modern Valentine's Day include hearts, doves, flowers and the winged figure of Cupid.
