This exotic blend name originates from the 18th century camel caravans that drove the transcontinental tea trade from tea-producing areas to Russia, the traders' tea picking up a smokey flavour from their campfires en route.

Not made from Russian tea of course, this particular Russian Caravan is our special blend of Keemun and Oolong to create a smooth, satisfying tea with a slightly smokey flavour.

HOW TO MAKE RUSSIAN TEA RITUAL - RUSSIAN CARAVAN

Traditionally, Russians have brewed their tea in a urn called a Samovar, with a charcoal-filled chimney.

Once the teapot has been filled with strong tea, it's placed on top of the chimney to keep warm, before being topped up with hot water from the Samovar and served with lumps of sugar.

On those days that you can't face leaving the warmth of your bed, a steaming cup of Russian Caravan might be just the thing to tempt you.

With a dash of milk and maybe a sprinkle of sugar, it's the perfect tea to start your day.

Ingredients

Black tea, just like green tea, comes from the Camellia Sinensis plant.

- After plucking, the leaves are laid on drying trays & withered to remove some moisture and make more pliable
- The leaves are then rolled and laid out and a heady mixture of warm air, aromatic juices, bacteria & enzymes leads to oxidation (a natural reaction that affects strength & colour)
- Oxidation is stopped by firing (with hot air) when the leaves are the right (brown) colour depending on the region
- The leaves turn black as they dry
