Afternoon Tea - Teaware

Looking ahead to summer & the promised tea parties it brings, we’ve offered up some suggestions of the finest teaware to treat yourself & your guests to.

With the days gradually getting longer and summer at the doorstep, here at Twinings we’ve been talking lots about the joys of hosting an Afternoon Tea party and everything that goes along with it. We’ve been offering up all sorts of tips, from what to serve - like trying a fancy new type of tea - to which food to best pair tea with, to ideas about a general theme for the party. We hope we’ve got all the bases covered!

After all, an afternoon tea party is a ceremony like any other, and as such has its own set of traditions and rituals. The great thing about it is that you can truly make it your own by putting your own stamp on it and letting your creativity shine through.

One of the most important parts of afternoon tea is the look and feel of it, so this time around we thought it would be great to have a little look at the various teaware options out there. From pots and cups to some tea-related gadgets and gizmos, you’re bound to find something that best suits your party needs.

Picking the right pot

Where better to start than by picking out the right teapot? A teapot isn’t just a means to serve tea - It’s often the centrepiece of the table as well, so the right choice can be a real conversation starter. We think that a teapot is the best way to share tea amongst friends, and there are endless numbers of different styles and shapes to suit any occasion.

The standard teapot design has remained unchanged for centuries, and the reasons why are clear.

Unlike a tea cup, there’s very little wiggle room when it comes to general teapot design, you can’t get away with not having a handle here!

First and foremost, the size of the teapot might be your first consideration, depending on how many people you’re entertaining you might need a bigger pot!

Thankfully, teapots come in all sizes, from something like the dainty Red Calico Teapot Small to the contemporary Kinto Couleur Tea For One Set, to larger pots like the Bitossi Large Glass Kettle or the charming Loveramics Petal Large Teapot, you’re bound to find something to suit your needs in our collection.

Burleigh Blue Regal Peacock Large Teapot

£55.00 each

The generous “Cranbourne” shape teapot is hand printed in Blue Regal Peacock by Burleigh. It has a grid in the spout to regulate the flow of your favourite tea.

Picking the right material is another factor (although, choosing between a ceramic, porcelain or glass teapot is mostly down to personal preference and aesthetic choice). Glass teapots, for example, are great for those who want to take an interest in seeing the leaves unfurl whilst they infuse, and which also makes it clear to see when the tea is ready.

Some of our other favourite teapots include the beautiful Alison Appleton Darcy Teapot which has the appearance and sophistication of a traditional cast iron pot, but is actually made from porcelain and clay, making it much lighter, or the Loveramics Weave Glass Teapot with White Porcelain Infuser - the perfect blend of sophistication, practicality and elegant design.

Strain or drain?

But here’s another point to consider. You might already be happy with your choice of teapot, but have a different problem that needs resolving - you could find that when entertaining guests, not everybody necessarily enjoys the same type of tea! In this case the perfect solution would be to use an individual strainer such as a Miss Etoile Tea Strainer - available in a charming Gold Heart design, or elegant Silver Ball design, or the Sagaform Tea Infuser with Holder - a simple yet innovative solution. Serving accessories really do make life that little bit easier!
