Twinings Great Taste Awards 2019

May we proudly present the Twinings recipients of the Great Taste Award.

Great Taste is the largest and most trusted accreditation scheme for fine food and drink. It supports, promotes and mentors artisan food producers large and small, who want to supply the UK independent retail sector and overseas stores selling fine food.

Great Taste offers a unique benchmarking and product evaluation service leading to an independent accreditation that encourages confidence and commercial success for small business, generating greater awareness for products locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

Since 1994, more than 120,000 products have been put through this robust judging process. Each one is fastidiously blind-tasted by selected chefs, buyers, fine food retailers, restaurateurs, food critics and writers over 60 judging days.

Great Taste Awards - The 'Oscars' of the food world

In 2019 over 500 judges, including specially trained food writers inputting judges’ comments, came together at 75 judging days from March through to early July.

Judging took place at Guild HQ in Dorset and at our permanent office, event and judging venue close to Borough Market, London. As ever we have judged at specialist test centres for tea, filter coffee and espresso.

The judges, from all corners of the food world, blind-taste in teams of 3 or 4 ensuring we get a balance of expertise, age and gender.

English Strong Breakfast

A bright and brisk infusion, colour-y and distinct. It takes milk well, producing a wonderful liquor with impressive brightness.

English Breakfast

Thick and strong. Rather papery, but satisfying nonetheless. Bright with milk.

Lady Grey

A clever blend of flavours, as of cardamom and bergamot. We enjoyed the mild citrus presence and balanced blend.

The Full English

Thick, brisk, markedly astringent. Bright with milk, punching through the milkiness and retaining great colour.

Superblends - Moment of Calm

A crystal clear liquor of pale amber with a freshly baked biscuity aroma. Well balanced with sweetness and subtle spicy tones. We feel that it may benefit from being a slightly stronger brew but it is a generally well balanced blend. The spice is warm and inviting on the nose with hints of toasted spice and caramel. Once infused, it's a pale amber with good clarity and gently spiced. More caramel sweetness on the palate with hints vanilla. It is very easy and pleasant to drink, the finish isn't long but it does leave a delicate and delicious vanilla toast in your mouth.

Cold Infuse - Coconut, Pineapple & Green Tea

Strong pineapple aroma. Pineapple is the dominant flavour, with a hint of creaminess form the coconut. The mint comes through at the end. The judges struggled to get any green tea flavour, but did find this to be an enjoyably refreshing drink. There is pineapple on the nose with tropical hints. The green tea is gently handled and the drink is clean and light.

Cold Infuse - Rose Lemonade

The freshness of approach here is welcome, whilst the rose brings enjoyment to the palate. Refreshing and clean and honest and straightforward. The balance of the elements is well judged and overall a fine product. Lovely rose colour with an aroma of the rose. However the lemon comes through strongly on the palate and balances the rose. Very refreshing.

Cold Infuse - Passionfruit, Mango & Blood Orange

A lovely clear liquid. The flavours coat the tongue. Refreshing mouthfeel. Fabulous length with all the named ingredients standing proud. We can see it being used for straight drinking and as a mixer. Attractive colour and appearance. Smells very strongly of passion fruit, though on drinking it we were able to identify the mango, and orange too. Good balance and level of flavour. To some extent this divided the judges regarding the wateriness of the product, but that's arguably what it set out to do, and the others really enjoyed drinking it.
