Antlers

The Tea Club looks at Satemwa Antlers. Producing a delicate cup with a floral character, this is an delightful white tea delicacy from Africa.

This month we have a very rare tea for you to taste on Twinings Tea Tasters – a tea that is also rather unusual to look at. The Satemwa Antlers, or as we simply call them, Antlers, are made with the velvety, tender and juicy stems of the tea leaves. Their distinctive shape gives the tea its name.

WHAT IS IT?

Antlers

What makes this Malawian tea so different and unique are the very young, antler-shaped pubescent stems that ultimately develop an open bud that forms a leaf. Japanese Kukicha and Kurigana are examples of the very few other stem teas that exist of this type.

What makes a Tea White?

Satemwa Antlers is a highly unusual and unique, delicate tea with a gorgeous floral character. Simply dried, with no oxidisation or fermentation as used for black teas, the antlers are classified as a white tea.

Plucking

Fresh shoots from the tea bushes are plucked, dried slowly over several days and then stripped of their leaves by hand, leaving the velvety, tender and juicy stems whose distinctive shape give the tea its name.

WHERE IS IT FROM?

Satemwa Tea Estates was founded in 1923 by the Scot Mclean Kay and is one of the last remaining family owned Tea Estates in Malawi. At present, Satemwa is managed by Alexander Kay who is a third generation tea farmer. The plantation is located 1000 – 1200 m above sea level on the slopes of Thyolo Mountain in the
Shire Highlands in Malawi.

The team at Satemwa strive to be different. They lend their own touch and twist to the leaves and are the only estate in Malawi which produces orthodox teas. The unique endemic cultivars in Malawi and the specific
terroir and climate add to this uniqueness.

Brewing, Serving And Tasting Your Tea

Given that Satemwa Antlers fall into the white tea category, you’ll first need to let your boiled water cool for four to five minutes. Three grams per cup is about the right measure – this works out at a level soup spoon
or a good pinch, if you’re happy to use your fingers.

Then, once you've poured on your water, you'll need to wait around three to three and a half minutes to let your antlers work their magic - or a little longer if you like a stronger tea.

If the teapot has a central diffusion chamber, gently agitate it before serving.

You'll find that the colour is absolutely glorious - like a ray of sunshine - a quality that carries through into its gentle but powerful floral aroma.Texturally, Satemwa Antlers are also quite different, creating a velvety quality that's the perfect backdrop for the grape, pear and citrus notes that run right through it.

Take your time to savour your Satemwa Antlers, they're a real 'one off'. So until next time, happy tea times.
